My husband had last week off from work. Every family member got to chose one activity that we would try and do. I thought the list was really pretty telling about our personalities:
Dad: go to the photography exhibit at the BYU Art Museum.
Mom: take a long nap & eat lots of naughty snacks
Jake: go to a movie
Matthew: go out for ice-cream
Hannah: suck on the list and pray this isn't the time I get lead poisoning
All went as planned. We finished the week with Dad's activity to the BYU art museum. Chris and I have approached parenting refusing to be outdone by 3 children all under the age of 5. We persist in doing activities that shouldn't be done with small children but somehow we forget that from day to day. I thought all was going well at the museum until we caught one son under the ropes touching the pre-historic artifacts and our other son saying things like, "Ohhh, come touch this one. It smears." But then the 2 boys had a moment together...a moment where they discovered photography and became riveted. Here is the picture that opened their cultural minds...

I don't know how clear the image is going to be but it is a picture of a man jumping off a building on Madison Avenue in New York City. Jake said he would call it "Man About to Bonk His Head" and Matthew said it should be called "Man Jumping Into A Pool". We discovered on the way home that this same photograph was in the brochure from the museum so this print has a permanent home on my darling boys' bulletin board in their room where I've caught Matthew standing serenely and staring at it several times. I really can't even make a good guess at what is going through his head but I'm grateful his bedroom is on the ground floor.
After the museum we went to the bookstore where I got chocolate covered gummy bears and browsed the new titles. My favorite book title was "Depression For Dummies". Chris and I decided it was probably the kind of book title that would be just the right nudge to put the depressed person over the edge.
